Position Overview

The Dean's Office in the Werklund School of Education is currently seeking a Part-time Regular Web Designer and Technical Administrator.

Reporting to the Senior Communications Manager in the Werklund School of Education(WSE), the Administrator ensures that websites are aligned with WSE strategic direction and consistent with overall institutional efforts. Working collaboratively with the Manager, the Administrator is responsible for the design, technical development, and administration of the WSE websites. While much of the work is independent and self-directed, the incumbent will work collaboratively with WSE academic and support staff, University Relations, UCIT, and with other members of the University.

The focus of this role is to build/create and to provide strategic, creative and technical advice and expertise to ensure web resources are maximized and meet the needs of WSE. The ability to consult with clients on the design and production of websites, web-based applications, and electronic marketing/communication materials is required. The work environment involves a high level of organization, creativity, continuous change, and shifting priorities. Essential to this position is the ability to provide exceptional customer service, communicate effectively and handle a high volume of work during peak periods. The incumbent must have the ability to work under pressure and deadlines, and to handle numerous priorities at once. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required. Work is driven by critical deadlines and requires the management of competing interests and deadlines.
 
The normal work day is 3.5 hours per day, five days per week, Monday to Friday. Flexible hours may be required in order to meet faculty, staff, and student needs.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Provides and applies expertise in the area of graphic/web design, and the management and maintenance of websites and other web-based applications
  • Expectations are that the incumbent continually develops their knowledge utilizing leading edge technology and on-line communication to ensure smooth operation of key web-based products and services offered by the Faculty and School
  • Ensures understanding of WSE’s purpose, services, resources and needs in order to facilitate effective web technologies
  • Ensures that the WSE and its organizational units have outstanding web presences which optimize the internal and external relations of the WSE
  • Ensures brand and positioning protocols for the web marketing efforts of WSE
  • Ensures that web-site services are continuously upgraded to meet the changing needs of all clients
  • Under the direction of the Manager in WSE, establishes and maintains website standards/guidelines
  • Provides regular database backups and ensures its integrity and security
  • Remains current with software upgrades and newly developed techniques
  • Understands the graphics and web trade from both a technical and a marketing perspective
  • Ensures that academic and support staff are courteously provided with information and advice about effective website functions and design
  • Establishes and maintains links with UCIT and liaises with other University web technicians
  • Provides academic and support staff with training in the use of web-based tools
  • Develops and delivers workshops that assist academic and support staff to integrate web-based technology into their projects and teaching
  • Works professionally and effectively as a member of the WSE Communications team and other campus web communications staff, as well as other members of the University Relations team
  • Ensures project success is achieved by using the most effective design concepts and techniques throughout the project, given resources, budgets and deadlines
  • Effectively prioritizes multiple demands in a changing environment
  • Remains current with emerging design and web technologies to provide knowledgeable, timely, and appropriate resources, tools, and recommendations for an effective content management scheme and maximum external exposure. Continuously develops knowledge of current web technologies, ensuring awareness of the latest trends and tools
  • Participates in consultations with users regarding developing needs and opportunities as required

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in related field, undergraduate degree or college diploma in Computer Science is desired
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience with web-based design and web-based programming is required
  • Excellent knowledge of Drupal, Windows and Macintosh OS and working knowledge Unix and Linux, and the ability to address browser compatibility issues
  • Programming knowledge of PHP, CGI, ASP, ASP.NET, JavaScript, VB Script, HTML/XHTML, and demonstrable skills in applying the following to website construction: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, ASP, .NET, PHP, MySQL, Perl, as well as Flash, Breeze, Acrobat and other Adobe Creative Suite products
  • Computer experience in both PC and Macintosh environments using the following software: Adobe Suite of Programs (Illustrator, Image Ready, InDesign & Photoshop), QuarkXpress, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Flash and Microsoft Office is required
  • Ability to ensure the continuous operation of the website, content management system, and developed web forms and applications
  • Strong background in graphics software is desired
  • Desire to continually upgrade knowledge and skills in relation to the technical and design aspects of this position is required
  • Knowledge of the range and diversity of the academic and service programs at the University of Calgary is an asset. Working experience in a post-secondary academic environment and on-line commercial databases would be desired
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills along with a high level of personal effectiveness
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills and demonstrated flexibility to deal with constant change. The ability to work independently and effectively within a team environment, handle multiple tasks and show initiative in dealing with a variety of requests from different people. Proven ability to set priorities and complete tasks within specified timelines is required
  • Demonstrated ability to be a collaborative team member is a must for this position. Display good judgment, tact and diplomacy in interactions with academic and support staff, students, and members of the public.
